French 24:5 lost in translation

Writing the post for lost in translation made me aware of my spelling, grammar, and capitalization because of the number of people reading the blog. I wrote a quick summary of my presentation not to get too in detail of everything, but giving the names of the YouTube personalities I talked about to allow the readers to do their own research and exploration at their leisure. Additionally, just saying everything would restrict what they would learn and how to interpret it, they can interpret the videos anyway they like with only an influence on a theme from my part.

Technology helps me connect with people easier and using many different media, giving me the chance to choose. It makes communication faster and more available in different ways, at different times, and with different results. It may decrease face to face talking a little bit by providing ways to talk to other people online or through other means instead of forcing you to talk to others around you. You can make more social ties and be able to continue ties when seperated. To be always on allows you to have the opportunity to communicate with others.

I had a lot of fun at the bancroft library visit. The curator was very nice and we saw lots of very old manuscripts and other forms of writing. My favorite was the old chorus book. It was really cool feeling it and hearing the story on how it was made from sheepskin and wooden covers. It really looks like one of those medival books monks would pour over and read from. I really want to take some of my friends to see these too lol. It would have been nice to see a good original papyrus, but the recreated one was good enough. I liked the room too. I am curious about the last book he would have shown us, but seeing the printing room was cool too. The trip was a good one.

My phone conversations vary with the person on the other side of the phone. If it is an unknown number, I will respond with a questioning “hello? who is this?’ and go from there. If it is someone I know I start with a “hi” and an explanation on why I’m calling, skipping the introductions altogether. I use caller ID by looking at the phone and reading the number/name displayed. I usually pick up all the time. unless I am in a meeting, movie theatre, etc. I rarely avoid anyone ont the phone. I just never give those people my phone numbers. If I know I can reach somone using the phone, I’ll call. If I’m not sure if they are in a class or something I’ll send a text.

french 24: 3

This weeks topic is on Blogs, youtube, wikipedia, and even the talk shows/radio shows. Blogging lets me share my crazy ideas and thoughts. The thing I like about it is that my blog is small so it wont get too much of the harsh critical internet world’s responses (hopefully). What I dislike about it is I have to pay to put things like videos and my my own background, but thats about it so far, haha! I usually don’t write a journal unless it is assigned. Most the the writing I do is an assignment or factual information. My writing online is just information about things, like me, and comments. Compared to a paper journal that I would have written in, the most obvious difference between this and that is that this blog is much more legible. My handwriting is like a secret alien hyroglyph that requires years to decifer. The reason for my ineligible handwriting is a mix of security, fun, practicality, speed, and laziness. It is a security feature that allows me to write what I think without anyone else able to read it and comment on it directly. Plus it’s fun watching other people claim they can read it, fail, and look at me incredulously as I read it aloud. :] I use it for it’s speed and practicality. It is much faster for me to write that way where I can take more notes in less time. I also have ways of drawing my attention to the important facts. But of course it is mostly me being lazy where I dont want to spend the time and energy writing neatly. I only write neatly if it is very important like applications or checks. It hurts my hand to write neatly because it is so used to writing my own way. Plus this way no one can copy off of me :p the cheaters. Other than my handwriting thats the only difference I can think of besides being able to attach media files or better pictures than what I would be able to draw. I use wikipedia as a beginning point in research to get the main idea of what it is. Then I move out for more legitimate resources for the details.

Baron’s chapter on away messages and facebook has given me a written experience of these programs. i only post away messages to indicate that i truly am away. I use the invisible function to be on and not be seen. I usually use the standard away message bc i’m in a hurry to go somewhere or do something. Once in a while I’ll put shower or dinner. Many people I know put their messages of life, quotes, or music they’re listening to on their status message, not their away message. And I’ve only seen straight forward messages. As for facebook, if I know them, or there are enough of my friends who know them, I will add them. I do find myself looking at the friend count once in a while to compare, but I don’t take it seriously. I use aim as a communicator and facebook to see how everyone else is doing and to “present” myself as Baron puts it. I’ll use facebook to comment on things or talk to people who don’t have my sn.

Some questions…

What is your opinion on the research on how much time we spend on facebook/aim? I know I leave aim or the page open and leave it idle. For the number of hours, I think I use aim more.

Do away messages become another way to impress people or present yourself to your peers?

Do you find yourself editing your facebook to match the ideal of your self?

French 24 1: Multitasking and “IMing”

While reading Baron’s chapters on multitasking and IMing, I found some things i am familiar with. First off is multitasking. I do it often, usually music, AIM, a couple internet browsers, and a school document on the computer. Some non-computer tasks are talking on the phone, reading tons upon tons of school reading, playing games, cleaning, and eating. I usually have a primary task at hand whether it is on or off the computer. The other tasks are secondary to that primary one. When i find time off the primary task, I can devote it to a secondary task. I try not to talk on the phone and AIM at the same time, but when one interrupts the other, I hate laying the other one off.

I see myself thinking of AIM as more of an informational thing and more as a conversation. I use many contractions because it saves me time and it is easier. I also use emoticons, but sparingly. I find myself to have long goodbyes from 5-30 minutes long.

So here are some survey questions.

1. What are some things you do when you multitask normally?

2. Do you find yourself adding more and more tasks and why do you add them?

3. Do you find your IM conversations to resemble speech or writing more and why?
